Dad, Teacher, Writer

While teaching at an urban high school in the Bay Area for 20 years, Matt Amaral has written hundreds of articles on education and designed popular curriculum for fellow English teachers. After taking ten years off of publishing to raise his kids, Matt is back with his archived articles from the viral blog Teach4Real, and new weekly posts on what teaching full time in today’s classrooms looks like. His classroom tested, 80+ page PDFs for teaching books like The House and Mango Street and Romeo and Juliet, are once again available for purchase for real teachers in real schools. Follow Matt and his journey as he finally (hopefully?) publishes some books along the way. Matt only uses AI for cover art, all his units are tested in his class and made by him over the last two decades. He is currently teaching Fahrenheit 451 and his unit is available here. Join him and use his 5 quizzes, final exam, handouts, and essay prompts.

Matt is one of the longest serving Puente teachers in California

Much of my success as a teacher is because I was a Puente teacher first. In my first year of teaching I had my first Puente class. This was important because I now had access to Puente’s network of teachers, counselors, administrators and even the authors of the books we teach. 20 years later, here in the 2026-27 school year, I am following my 9th cohort into their sophomore year. Puente has helped me hone my craft and perspective, and I’ve gotten to meet some pretty cool people along the way such as: Gary Soto, Reyna Grande, Lou Diamond Phillips, Gina Rodriguez, Sal Castro, Edward James Olmos and Sonia Nazario.

What my former students say

Mr. Amaral taught me how to write. Period. When I got to UC Riverside I was able to use everything he taught me. I was surprised by many of the students around me who were from private schools all around California who just couldn’t write. I found I was one of the strongest writers and was always helping my friends write their papers. Mr. Amaral was always challenging us. He was hard but fair, and he never takes a day off.

Stepping into Mr. Amaral’s classroom changed my life. His no-phone policy and push to make his curriculum almost all on paper creates better writers and also better HUMANS. Through his AP English Language class my junior year, I was inspired to join his journalism class as well my senior year, which built the foundations to me becoming a sports writer for two publications since I graduated just a few months ago. With those same foundations, he has inspired me to continue pursuing my future as an NBA broadcaster. Mr. Amaral’s immersive lectures really define what it means to be a TEACHER. Having someone who is a talented writer as a mentor really has developed who I am today.
