This is 70 page unit is what Matt taught last year in the 25/26 school year to a class of 34 9th graders. Matt has been refining and using these handouts and lessons for teaching The House on Mango Street for the last 20 years. The only part of this that is AI is the cover art. In this downloadable PDF you will get handouts for building interesting, complex autobiographical writing that allows students to tell their own stories about their own families. Included is a final exam, specific writing instruction for paragraph writing, lit maps, writing workshop, and pacing guide aligned to CC standards. Matt starts 9th grade with this every year so he can get to know his students by hearing their stories.

This 100+ page PDF has a quiz for each scene, final exam, Acting Troupe protocols, specific dramatic performance instruction and mulitple handouts for analyzing the play. If that isn’t enough, Matt’s Reading Log System has notes, vocab, quotes, commentary, and summary FOR EVERY SCENE IN THE PLAY so the instructor can know what is in each scene and what you are guiding students to look for. Only the cover art is AI, the rest has been used in Matt’s actual classroom in the last school year. Students filled out a Reading Log for each scene, performed each Act in class at the front of the room (with their arms in the air every time they quote Shakespeare), took a quiz at the end of each act, and wrote an essay at the end of the unit. It ended up being many of the students’ favorite text of the year- they loved it.
